Classic Farces

Molière’s theatre pieces were popular pieces. Born with the name Jean-Baptiste Poquelin and son of a rich “tapissier” of the rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, he made a tough choice to devote his life to touring as a ”farceur” and comedian, having studied also law in Orléans before. Only after his first successful performances, farces and theatre plays, he could afford to buy the theâtre du Palais Royal, despite a bankruptcy about 20 years earlier with his own theatre. The much later title “Troupe du Roi” (of Louis XIV) and a pension by the King assured a financial and political independence rarely found in this period of classic theatre.
Molière’s “Les fourberies de Scapin” was written towards the end of his life and as a classic farce in the 17th century. The story is full of funny scenes and witty dialogues, which make it a great “intergenerational” theatre play even today. The plot about the institution of marriage addresses a cleaving social and legal construct “marriage”, which continues to excite all generations and across centuries.

Colette The Cat

The novel “The Cat” (La chatte) was written by Colette with a view on the emancipation of women. The main character “Camille” freshly married to her husband is terribly jealous of the cat 🐈‍⬛ of her husband Alain. In order to deal with this situation she dropped the cat from a window in a moment of anger. As her husband seemed ready to divorce her due to this incident she claimed that her husband defended higher moral standards for the cat than for her psychological wellbeing. The novel certainly raises the issue of hierarchy of rights and duties. The moral dilemma highlights the schism of animal rights and/versus human rights. This specific issue seems to be resolved in the modern context, where both animal and human rights are protected in parallel. On a more abstract level, however, our relationship with animals and nature requires us to balance the rights and relationships again and again.

Artists Intergenerational

Generations influence each other. That’s a very simple general statement. Biographies, auto-biographies and life course research have all established sometimes more, sometimes less direct influences between the generations. The exhibition “A partir d’elle. Artists and their Mother“, curated by Julie Héraut, combines literature, photo and video that speak to the rather complex psychological or sociological issue. Visits in 2025 available at Stichting A, Brussels.
The starting point of the inquiry into the nature of photography by Roland Barth is chosen like an investigation into a crime. Sophie Létourneau had written an essay which proposes to read the original text by Barthes from this perspective. The artists in the exhibition seem to follow this process of asking themselves what their relationship to their mother is like and how to represent this in an artistic form.
A life course perspective, which takes images or videos with 10 or about 20 years difference, offers a kind of analytical as well as artificialized vision of the evolution of the artists’ relationships with their mother. Realistic images with a morphing backwards from old to young is presented next to images confronting young and old next to each other. “Words don’t come easy to me” could be the title of one of the videos where a young artist has a particularly hard time to talk to his/her mother.
Just after the celebrating Franz Kafka last year and his famous “Letter to my father”, the inquiry into artists and their mothers complements the analytical and artistic vision and interpretations of the child and parent intergenerational relationship.

Nazi Reinterpretations

Even almost 80 years after the end of Nazi terror and the 2nd World War started by Germany, we witness attempts to reinterpret the lives and careers of many Nazi officials. In the same realm, the crimes committed to pull out „Stolpersteine“ try to negate the horrible crimes committed by the Nazi leadership and their followers. The special exhibition at „Topography of Terror“ on „Reinhard Heydrich. Career and Violence” allows to study the biography of this high ranking and convinced Nazi official. After the usual career trajectory of a marine soldier he entered the Nazi secret police and made his career moving up the ranks showing readiness to use above average violence. This seems to have been a precondition to qualify for fast career trajectories. These personality traits have been demonstrated for thousands of Nazi officials in their professional life. This exhibition has additional merits to provide shocking evidence that the wife of Heydrich even many years after the end of the Nazi terror and 2nd WW does not show any signs of regret for what were her husband’s crimes against humanity. They had a splendid life and lived in a palace near Prag before her husband died after an attack by partisans. This is a great lesson to sharpen our awareness of those trying to reinterpret the lives of Nazi leaders and many of their followers. It is a timely reminder to not focus on rosy pictures of the Nazi time without the acknowledgment of the responsibility for millions of people who died. Family Music Days

Kids are queens, kings and princesses as well as princes at the family music days in Berlin at the FEZ. Kids can enjoy the full spectrum of musical experiences from just listening to playing themselves, if they feel like it or dare to risk a sound. Just making noise is okay, too. Building your very own version of a musical instrument is a great learning experience for the young. To make music it doesn’t always have to be an expensive instrument. Your own imagination assisted by persons with patience and passion creates marvelous sound experiences. Initiating kids to the endless worlds of sound is having lasting effects on them. Great to see a concert hall full of young enthusiasts. Learning is so much fun, if taught in accessible and inclusive ways. Professional instructors joined by many volunteers make the world go round for kids. Wish you we here. Let’s spread the message.

Künstlerin

Wie werde ich zur kunstschaffenden Person? Ein Lehrstück über die Soziologie und Entstehung der Profession der Künstlerin ist in Paris, im Gebäude des Senats zu besichtigen. Das Musée du Luxembourg zeigt den schwierigen Weg hin zur bildenden Künstlerin seit seiner Anfangszeit im Frankreich des späten 18-ten und frühen 19-ten Jahrhundert. Es war und ist ein schwerer Weg, in einer von Männern dominierten Welt als Frau eine Eigenständigkeit zu erreichen. Die ersten Stationen dieses Kampfes werden in der Ausstellung deutlich. Zulassung zu den Ateliers, der Ausbildung und zu „Kunst als Beruf“ mit professioneller Anerkennung und Möglichkeit, seinen Lebensunterhalt damit zu verdienen, war und ist ein kämpferisches Unterfangen. Dieser Passionsweg wird deutlich in der kleinen sehr gelungenen, soziologischen Ausstellung. Die Genealogie und Soziologie der Professionen spricht seit langem von der „gläsernen Decke“, die viele Frauen an dem Aufstieg in höhere und höchste Positionen innerhalb einer Profession hindert. Das bleibt für jede Generation von Frauen ein Kampf bei dem Ihnen nichts geschenkt wird, auch oder gerade weil, die Bilder schön anzusehen sind. So erlaubt die Ausstellung, die Frau und den Beruf hinter den Bildern zu sehen. Eine Reflektion und Projektion über die Kunstschaffenden. Ein Spaziergang im Jardin du Luxembourg ist anschließend der Erholung dienlich.
