AI data Input

If you ever wondered where the information from AI and AI chatbots comes from, you will not be surprised that this webpage schoemann.org is regularly solicited for such purposes. The number of crawlers, that do so, is quite large. The ability to trace what exactly they are harvesting on your website, is quite a tricky issue. At least a basic awareness of how the internet has been transformed in the last few years becomes evident through the comparison of unique visits, many through search engines like Google search or others, with the amount of contacts by AI-associated crawlers (see slide from own webpage below).
During he last month up to 2026-4-27 there were about 75.000 contacts, compared to 93.000 during the previous month.
At first sight, AI chatbots have largely outnumbered the “personal visits” of my webpage (see evaluate web analytics). On the other hand, I have no information of how many visits are, (at least potentially) re-directed hints from AI chatbots to my content.
In terms of “traffic” for a webpage, the information of how the AI-driven or AI-assisted search operates with other persons’ contributions will be the challenge of the coming years. If AI chatbots had to pay 10 cents per visit, I would have a comfortable pay every month from this content use. The issue of AI paying for access to reliable and high quality content has to be dealt with sooner rather than later. You may prompt a chatbot on this issue.

Quantum battery

The first prototype of a Quantum battery has been successfully tested. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation CSIRO with corresponding author James Q. Quach published the paper on the “quantum battery tuned for strong light–matter coupling” (Kieran Hymas et al. 2026) open access. Although there have been close to 20 papers on the theory behind quantum charging already, the demonstration as a proof of concept (in business terminology) has been missing so far. The superextensive charging with photons builds upon “a laser pump pulse with bandwidth ~31 nm and resonant with the LP branch induces excitations in the quantum battery” (Kieran Hymas et al. 2026 p.3). Since batteries need not only be charged, but also discharged in a safe and fast way, the prototype demonstrated also this additional functionality.
This is a huge step towards the feasibility of the “All electric society” as the efficient storage which includes fast charging and discharging beyond storage have been a bottleneck in the wider adoption of the “All electric society”.

Work time reduction

One of the major elements of social progress in the 20th century consisted in the reduction of work time. Reductions from 48 hours per week in the first half of the century were largely reduced to 40 hours per week or less in some industries with strong trade union representation. State regulations also pushed in this direction with positive implications for physical and mental health as well as wellbeing. Advances in longevity of employees may be attributable to this social progress agenda of the 20th century. In the 21st century we witness a new thrust of enterprises and employees striving to implement a 4 day work schedule by at the same time organizing a further reduction of work hours. The scientific evidence which is based on pre- and post trial assessments of workers satisfaction shows rather positive results (Fan, Schor, Kelly, Gu 2025). More studies are due to accompany this potential of further health and wellbeing effects of reduced work time and the reorganization of work time in enterprises.

Pepper and Nao

We have seen many persons that became somehow emotionally touched when addressed by Pepper or Nao. These 2 versions of a humanoid robot have served for thousands of persons as the first welcoming moving information desk. I have been guided through museums (DTM, Berlin) and exhibitions by this robot guide with a friendly outlook. Beyond those experiences there is a lesson in industrial policy to be learned from this innovative French humanoid robot. The start-up enterprise was founded as early as 2005. With a substantial funding of ½ billion € from Softbank the enterprise could develop robots for the fields of personal companionship, education, restaurant services or personal care for the elderly.
We have seen the robots at international fairs in several countries, but the prohibitive costs have limited the rapid spread of the robots to broader applications. Subsequently, the decline of the enterprise, or not reaching financial targets fast enough, caused the loss of financial support for the enterprise. In 2025, Aldebaran filed for bankruptcy and the patents will be sold to the best offers. The employees received generous packages of departure and will most likely find rapidly jobs in other robotics, IT or AI related fields.
The loss is probably greatest for the persons who were serviced by Pepper or Nao in elderly homes or the Swiss hospitals, as spare parts or updates will no longer be available. The humanoid robot story is yet another case where the social, economic and financial context of technology is overriding the technological innovation process.

Design skills

The is a huge B2C or C2B market in connection with home design and adaptations. Nowadays people are inspired by instagram, pinterest, YouTube and TikTok. Additionally, many play around with Apps to create their own images of how they would like to arrange or rearrange their home. Some have taken first steps to include measurements of their home in the design. The compatibility with professional software of the construction sector, however, is a drawback that delays or leads people to go to enterprises that take into account the prior efforts of young lay designers. It is a little bit like an own contribution in home building quite popular among new home builders to alleviate the upfront cash needed for first home acquisition. The younger generation could offer some of their “digital native” skills to bridge the gap in construction and home design. Of course, reworking and precise measurements on the location will still be required as construction has a lot of legal liability issues involved. Cooperation is a form of burden sharing to advance faster and/or with lower costs.

Wellness Sickness

There appears to be some kind of a relationship between the 2 conepts of wellness and sickness. Some would argue that the more sick you are, the more you seek wellness. Sickness seems to be the precursor of wellness for many people. Wellbeing or happiness are even higher order concepts which are only indirectly related to wellness. In an almost 600 pages science and fiction novel, Nathan Hill (Link) constructs his plot based on the psychological research on the placebo effect. With a sufficient aura around a pseudo-medication administered in a wellness clinic, the clients or some figure near the 50% random positive effects are treated with at least no negative side effects. On page 152 we find the more explicit description of how to induce a placebo effect in participants. Context, expectations, faith, symbols, metaphors and story are all ingredients for a placebo effect to work. Sometmes without knowing we receive a treatment in our childhood or throughout the life course that we work on using placebo effects to overcome them. The novel by Hill (2024) is a well researched psychological as well as sociological fiction including a bibliography, which reminds us „If you cling too hard to what you want to see, you miss what’s really there.“ (p. 496).

Build Tec

Home construction has turned into the art of isolation. Saving energy is easiest in a well isolated home. Besides the roof the walls, doors and windows are next issue. Isolation inside and/or isolation outside are good points of departure. Heat pumps are the next step that needs attention. This is already a sequence of works that have to be planned well in advance. Electric current or LAN wiring or even fibre are additional features a modern home should be equipped with. Lots of different skills involved that we are unlikely to find in traditional occupations. Networks of enterprises are involved in building technologies. Startups in this area could offer better integrated services to clients to advance energy savings rather than the traditional skill sets spread over multiple trades and occupations. Learning tasks and skill needs are abundant.

Start-up Winner

The SCCON 2024 has awarded one of its prizes for start-ups to „neuraflow“, which proposes the programming of chatbots for small communities or cities among other AI-applications. The test in multiple languages for the city of Bremerhaven is fun to test and shows that online public services can be witty and fun to use. The incorporation of local dialects gives the impression of a very personalized service. Moving the administration closer to the heart and the location of its citizens is achievable through shifting communication online. Prior information before a first contact speeds up information and administrative processes for everyone involved. Congratulations to the team involved and we look forward to many nice applications of the same technology in other cities. Admin can be fun, even in Germany 😉😂

Sport Fashion

Sport is fashion and fashion is sport. Not only in the Euro 2024 the teams make a big fuzz about the design of their sportswear, but certainly the Olympic games in Paris 2024 will demonstrate the close links between the 2 worlds. We might say playing football is a bit like a fashion catwalk. Keep going right on target, despite obstacles, when thousands of people are watching your performance and potential failures very closely. Making a “bella figura” is a must in both spheres. There is also a strong tendency for “the winner takes all”, that s/he takes the trophy and the jackpot.
Both worlds are also big business in their own right. It is at least 100 years old that sport and fashion got married. The “Musée des arts décoratifs” in Paris had an excellent exhibition on the combination of sport and fashion (booklet link). According to the curators both spheres have always been interlaced. High-level performance and specialized fashion just made for a splendid combination. As the rich and wealthy had more than a penny or two to spend on their leisure activities the combination of sport and fashion soon became itself a big business, beside the visible beauty of the bodies, movements and dresses. Just watch the breakdance fashion as the latest addition to the repertoire of olympic disciplines. In a recent article in “Le Monde” (2024-7-11) the value of the market of sports including its fashionable merchandising is estimated to reach a turnover of € 500 billion in 2022.
The competition of sports has been turned into a competition of the best images and videos. Fashionable as well as functional clothing can assist in climbing the podium. In the Euro 2024 Football Final the teams equipped with Adidas (Spain) and with Nike (England) compete for the trophy. Changing equipment sponsorship from one to the other can raise substantial amounts for a team (€ 100 million/year for the German national team). Big business seems to take over sports and fashion after the century-old marriage of sport and fashion. Since then, they have jointly been on an extended honeymoon. Work Subordination

One of the defining principles besides the job description, working time, working place, remuneration of a work contract is the subordination to a superior. The employment contract entails some more or less strictly executed form of direction, but a right of direction nevertheless. This element of subordination has become a major issue in the definition of whether you are effectively an employee or a self-employed person. The digital revolution had enlarged the kinds of subordination. Platforms and algorithms, that distribute work among several employees (but named platform workers) disguised the subordination to a superior level of management to the platform and its seemingly anonymous algorithm. Many young riders were saying, I don’t like bosses, but I am willing to accept a “technical” platform that distributes work tasks only seemingly in a non-discriminatory way. Due to a failure of labour legislation to regulate early enough a thriving model of fake self-employment developed throughout Europe and beyond. Labour Courts have contributed a lot to correct the disguised subordination. Even Uber is advertising that they only operate as a broker of tasks, but have no subordinated employees. The related issue of subordination remains largely the same. Subordination to an algorithm of the distribution of tasks is the end result.
Many start-up enterprises use Kanban boards to facilitate project and team management. Shifting tasks between employees, introducing new tasks and self-selection of tasks are potentially subordination-free allocation of tasks (example software). Flat hierarchies seem more manageable through the use of such tools. The number of tools that integrate other office functions is impressive. When testing such tools, that become more popular also in the distribution of household tasks, beware of the data-hungry nature of such tools. For example, https://trello.com/ warns correctly in the small print that for its full functionality it would need to have permission to use “your” camera, microphone, contacts, photo library, calendar etc.
This demonstrates that subordination, nowadays, is complemented by the algorithmic use of a lot of privacy, we would never have agreed to a boss in person should even ask for. The new and old subordinators have powerful tools at hand, the subordinated will have to get their act together and limit the amount of subordination they are willing to accept.
Again, this is a generational topic. The low threshold to accept technical subordination in younger generations, your autonomous level-5 car is breaking earlier than you even perceive a risk, is confronted with the higher threshold to accept personal subordination for youth. Interestingly, for older generations the obverse is true. All in all, we have ample reason to rethink and re-define also in legal terms the manifold, disguised and new forms of subordination related to work.

Hannover Messe

Es war wieder einmal Hannover Messe. Das jährliche Treffen der Industrie mit samt der neuesten und manchmal auch älteren technischen Lösungen bietet eine eindrückliche Plattform zur Repräsentation von technischen Problemlösungen (offizielle Bilder LINK) . Da gibt es Lösungen für Probleme, bei denen wir noch nicht einmal wussten, dass wir sie haben oder einmal haben werden. So überrascht es nicht dort einige Firmen gelistet zu sehen, die ihre Dienste und Produkte anpreisen für die Unterstützung mit künstlicher Intelligenz, aber eben auch das Erkennen von Mogelei unter Zuhilfenahme von künstlicher Intelligenz. Also so ähnlich wie auf einer Automesse gibt es auch eine Abteilung die Rettungs- und Krankenwagen präsentiert. Technische Lösungen denken, wenn sie gute Lösungen sind, eben immer gleich ihr eigenes Versagen mit. Es bleibt letztlich nur die Frage, wie viele Versagensschleifen mitgedacht worden sind oder mitgedacht werden können. Der menschliche Faktor (als Fehlerursache) ist dabei ein sehr schwer auszuschließender Problemfall. Das musste nun auch die Hannover Messe als Ganze erfahren. Wenn die Menschen, die die Menschen hin- und wieder wegbringen vom Messegelände streiken, dann kommt das nahezu einem GAU (größtem anzunehmendem Unfall) gleich. Es gibt nicht nur menschliches Versagen bei Maschinenabläufen zu berücksichtigen, sondern auch mangelnde Kooperationsbereitschaft oder gar Böswilligkeit. Dabei sind wir nun aber schon in der Science-fiction oder James Bond 007 gelandet. Artificial Intelligence wird nicht frei von diesen allzu menschlichen Schwächen sein. Ein paar Gedanken sollten wir als Interessenten einer Fortbestehung unserer Spezies schon haben. Zwischenzeitlich lasse ich ChatGPD mal die Frage beantworten, wie Angestellte der Deutschen Bahn effektiv ihre Forderungen durchsetzen können. Kein Wunder, dass autoritäre Länder bereits mit dem Regeln von künstilicher Intelligenz begonnen haben. Ich zumindest habe viel Energie und CO2 gespart, denn der Messebesuch in Hannover fand virtuell statt. Deswegen dann auch keine eigenen neuen Bilder. Zur Produktion von Fake-Images oder recycling-Bildern früherer Messen (Photoshoppen) fehlt mir die Lust, Zeit und wohl auch die künstlerische vielleicht sogar kriminelle Energie.

Printing

Printing is a more than 5 century-old industry. The invention of the printing press is mostly attributed to Johannes Gutenberg from Mainz. However, the Asian precursor of mobile type letter printing of Cai Lun of the Jikji dates back to 1377 in Korea. These early masterpieces of the inventors of print can be inspected at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). The summary term for this technical innovation by historians is the “age of start-ups”. The procedure for Gutenberg to have 2 financing rounds with his “business angel” Johann Fust, who is later claiming even almost the full rights of the printed volumes, resembles the start-up spirit of today as much as that of the 15th century. Not belonging to the Patrician families, it was very difficult to defend your rights in courts of the gilds. The printers also became a very powerful intermediary themselves. They either sold pre-ordered books or had to take the risk of assessing the market for their product. The editors of today do much the same in the trading world of books and rights of authors and translators. Merchandising products of the church and later churches (protestants Luther Bible) had a particular value to both the clergy and its devotees, not to mention the shop keepers in-between as well. Pilgrimage business was another start-up industry still going strong in the 20th and 21st century and popular in all religions. The early prints and typographs applied are fascinating  in themselves, but there is a lot to be learned about the foundation of a new industries that still employs millions of people and is at the origin of learning revolution similar to the one we are living with the digital technologies today. The European languages with respect to printing had a certain competitive advantage, based on 26 letters of the alphabet, far fewer types were needed to print books than the more than a thousand different signs for printing a Korean text. In terms of printing this is cost-reducing and probably you do not need to be able to read yourself to be a printer or it makes proof reading more accessible favouring benefit margins. After all, the age of industrialisation probably had a precursor in the printing industry. The potential of the printing industry was only exploited much later to the full extent. Comparable to “peak oil” we hope to have reached “peak paper” at last as well for the sake of our planet and our own survival.

Bauhaus Haus

Zu den Ursprüngen des “Bauhaus” in Weimar gehört das Haus, welches die Feder von Georg Muche entworfen hat. Auch wenn das Bauhaus überwiegend mit Walter Gropius assoziiert wird, ist die Parallele von Georg Muche zu dem französischen Maler und Architekten Le Corbusier frappierend. Beide waren geprägt durch die eigene Malerei und Zeichenkunst. Die Entwürfe für Häuser oder Villen folgten Zeichnungen, die wiederum einer “cognitive map” mit Prinzipen der Konzeption und der Konstruktion folgten. Treu den Ansätzen des Bauhauses verwirklichte Muche bereits in 1923 sein Musterhaus. Modulare Bauweise, preisgünstige Erstellung, aktuelle Technologie, perspektivische Blickwinkel und Lichtspiel. Eine gewisse Parallelität zu der Villa La Roche und Jeanneret von Le Corbusier besteht nicht nur in der zeitlichen Dimension, sondern auch in dem Einfluß von kubistischem Spiel mit Perspektiven in Haus  und auf das Haus. Die von der Malerei herkommenden Architekten entwerfen ihre Räume mit “The painter’s eye“. Vielleicht kommt nicht zuletzt daher der Traum vom Eigenheim, der so prägend bleibt in ganz Europa und der westlichen Welt. Geprägt von den 1910er und frühen 1920er Jahren war kostengünstiges Bauen eine wichtige Rahmenbedingung. Relativ kleine Grundrisse, modular erweiterungsfähig, preiswerte Baustoffe sorgten trotz Schwierigkeiten für rasche Realisierungsmöglichkeiten. Eine gewisse deutsch-französische Parallelität drängt sich auf. LeMonde vom 6.4.2023 beschreibt ausführlich das Dilemma des 21. Jahrhunderts. Der Traum vom eigenen Haus wird für die nächsten Generationen schwieriger zu realisieren sein. Rohstoffpreise, Grundstückspreise, Arbeitslöhne, Kreditzinsen schnellen in die Höhe. Der Traum vom Eigenheim bleibt ein Traum älterer Generationen oder der glücklichen Erben solcher Häuser, fast unerreichbar für Durchschnittsverdienende. “Gemeinsam statt Einsam” ist die noch gültige Schlussfolgerung, die bereits Henning Scherf formuliert hat. Die neue Herausforderung für den Bau war, ist und bleibt die soziale Frage, der wachsenden Ungleichheit entgegen zu wirken.

Aphorismen L2

“Man soll öfters dasjenige untersuchen, was von den Menschen meist vergessen wird, wo sie nicht hinsehen und was so sehr als bekannt angenommen wird, dass es keiner Untersuchung mehr wert geachtet wird.“ (Lichtenberg S. 50). Eine eindrückliche Warnung sich nicht nur den großen Wellen und Wogen der Öffentlichkeit oder der Wissenschaften hinzugeben. Wo viele nicht hinschauen oder bewusst wegsehen, da gibt es meist einiges zu ergründen. Die Soziologie der kleinen Dinge, der Alltagsgegenstände bringt faszinierende Erkenntnisse hervor. Nehmen wir nur einmal die Bekleidung beim Kochen. Von der Kittelschürze zum gestylten Outfit für die Kochshow zum Gesellschafts-cooking“ haben sich Kleidungsstücke und Berufe in ihrer Funktionalität gewandelt. Dem Anlass entsprechend wird sich gekleidet. Kochen ist von den Hinterzimmern mancherorts ins Zentrum der Gesellschaft mutiert. Wertschätzung von Handwerk und delikate Zubereitung sollten Rekrutierung erleichtern. Bleibt nur noch die Arbeit drumherum. Einkaufen, Einräumen, Einweichen, Abtrocknen, Aufräumen. Die Arbeit geht uns nicht aus, sie verändert sich nur. Wertschätzung der kleinen Aktivitäten, desjenigen, „was von den Menschen meist vergessen wird, wo sie nicht hinsehen“ kann so aufschlussreich sein. Hinschauen und Verstehen lernen bleibt angesagt. Lichtenberg weiter: „Man frage sich selbst, ob man sich die kleinsten Sachen erklären kann; dieses ist das einzige Mittel, sich ein rechtes System zu formieren, seine Kräfte zu erforschen und seine Lektüre sich nützlich zu machen.“ Aphorismen können ein ganzes Forschungsprogramm auf den Punkt bringen und so die kleinsten Beiträge noch als nützlich erweisen. Narrative economics

Narratives have been with us as long as mankind exists. They just take different forms and content nowadays. Whereby narratives have first spread orally, then much later through written words, images and movies, they are forceful ways of communicating. Robert Shiller wrote a good story about narratives related to the field of economics. Referring to the writing of the polymath David Hume (1742), main proponent with Adam Smith of the Scottish enlightenment, contagion like in pandemics is mentioned for the first time to explain that “the multitude will certainly be seized by the common affection and be governed by it in all their actions”. (Shiller 2019, p. 58). In order to understand narratives going viral Shiller mentions the importance for narratives to be embedded in “narrative constellations”. Holding truth against spreading false narratives might not be enough in itself. Strong, catching narratives seem to bypass or override even truthful information. Additionally, narratives never die, but rather offer opportunities for repetition. On content of economic narratives Shiller exemplifies stock market panic, consumerism, financial stability, automation and AI fears, speculation bubbles, evil business and labour unions. Topics like lazy unemployed persons, too early entry into retirement, too late entry into the labour market for youth, women or migrants, all have endured stigmatising narratives across time and/or across countries. With emotional and powerful economic narratives all around us, trust and authenticity become a very important meta-currency. The instantly printing camera now serves as proof. Beware of the scenery, actors and action chosen. Medieval painter Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667 Leiden-Amsterdam) had chosen the economic narrative of the “women baking pan cakes and the child as beggar”.  Ending up in a museum instead of the White House is probably the opposite of going viral. The same Photo in black and white might have more of a trustworthy documentary character than the suggestive colours.

Sax and the Sax

Adolphe Sax is celebrated for his celebrated design of musical instruments in what it known and played as the Sax family of musical instruments. Most museums around the world have an example of an early Sax instrument in their collections. Beyond the many fascinating musical delights and emotions produced with the instrument, there is a century-old debate around the issue of the patent attributed to the various designs claimed by Adolphe Sax for the Saxophone among others. The patent attribution was hugely different across Europe in the 19th century (largely inexistant in other parts of the world at the time). The reason for this were differing laws guiding intellectual property rights. “In France no preliminary examination was necessary before a patent could be granted; in Germany examination was obligatory; and … British patent laws, which allowed makers to register designs or apply for patents for developments that had been copied from abroad (imported inventions), as long as they had not been published in Britain.” (Mitroulia and Myers, 2008 p.93). There is a well-documented controversy about the “Berlin valves” and the contested patent in France of it. Design of instruments, particularly popular ones, guarantee sizable earnings for producers of instruments. After 20 years of the 1846 patent in France 1866 the patent expired and the copies could become even cheaper. Some ugly disputes in the middle of Europe were fought around this issue. Remember that military music was still accompanying troops for better or worse. “Visionary or plagiarist? The authors are unable to give a simple verdict. … The fact that Sax claimed originality for some borrowed ideas seems in retrospect less important than the true vision shown.” (Mitroulia and Myers, 2008 p.135). We might not agree with this statement. The visit to the MIM in Brussels gives a good overview of the evolution of musical instruments over thousands of years and across continents, which pushes us to rethink the link of society and technology through the lens of music and technology. Welcome to techno music beyond patent laws. Pushing the boundaries of copyrights on sound sequences to new limits.

E for Enterprise

There is a new start-up scene in development in Germany. Interesting to witness the new entrepreneurial spirit. Many of the youngsters grow out of their peer community, wanting to try new ways of working and living together. The new bottom-up or grassroots form of growing a business out of a subculture seems to be an adequate response to the growing diversity of societies and easier ways of community building through online social media. Name it “reach” today, it is similar to what you previously called having a customer base. The new element refers to a blending of cultures. Learning through being online connected to the world, yes, the whole world, allows wide-spread influences from other sub-cultures, be they American, Asian or African. The young are open-minded to new stimuli like “Ikigai” from Japan and, of course, the life histories of founders and individual biographies from entrepreneurs like the legend of Steve Jobs, Apple’s legendary founder. Imagineering has become part of the movie-influenced influencers. Short clips out of a longer story build communities. The witty comment, like at school, gets more attention than the long boring story of the preacher, teacher or the mansplainer. The experience of “flow” is all around these communities and this creates the specific magic of the start-up scene. They take each other to new levels, mutually, reinforcing their preferences and life-styles. They are well aware of the risks they are taking. “Keinhorn” German short for “not an Einhorn”, the one billion value threshold for super successful enterprises taught them crucial lessons. The “ecology of organisations” which I referred to in my courses at the now renamed “Constructor University” previously “International University Bremen”, then “Jacobs University”, (let’s see what comes next?) is an important complementary research tradition to assess the “survival” of enterprises. I still recommend this University, which I quit to start new endeavors. It carries in its several “names” the important message:
start, fail, change, (repeat).

Der japanische Autor Ken Mogi hat ein Büchlein zum japanischen Lebenssinn oder Lebenskunst  “Ikigai” geschrieben (Leseprobe). Ich möchte daraus einen der letzten Sätze zuerst zitieren (S.169): “Aber vergessen sie nicht, bei der Suche hin und wieder herzlich zu lachen – heute und an jedem neuen Tag!” Also das mit dem Lachen kann ich schon ganz gut, deshalb als zusammenfassendes Urteil, mal auf Bayrisch: Ken Mogi, mog i.
Das Buch des Neurowissenschaftlers versucht auf recht seriöse Weise, westlich geprägten Lesern, japanische Lebensweise und Philosophie nahe zu bringen. Meine Lektüre von Herbert Rosendorfers: Briefe in die chinesische Vergangenheit, hat mich vor Jahrzehnten bereits auf einen humoristischen Zugang zum Kulturvergleich hingewiesen. Der chinesische Mandarin, versteht München = Min chen; Bayern = Ba yan. … und so wird aus Mogi = Mog I für mich. Ikigai beschreibt “die Freuden und den Sinn des Lebens” (S.17) iki = Leben, gai = Sinn. Die 5 Säulen des japanischen Lebenssinns lassen sich ohne weitere Hierarchie im Raum platzieren. Je nach kultureller Prägung erscheinen uns einzelne Begriffe oder Leitlinien als intuitiv zugänglicher. Hier meine Nennung, keine Reihung der 5 Säulen. Im Hier und Jetzt sein; Die Freude an kleinen Dingen entdecken; Klein anfangen; Loslassen lernen; Harmonie und Nachhaltigkeit leben.
Mogi (S.71) bringt die Begriffe “Loslassen” und “Im-Hier-und-Jetzt-Sein” mit dem zen-buddhistischen Grundsatz der Selbstvergessenheit zusammen. Für westlich geprägte Individualisten ist dieser Menschheitsansatz”als anonymes, fast unsichtbares Wesen, für das Individualität keinerlei Relevanz mehr hat” (S.72) aufgrund von totalitaristischen Erfahrungen nicht wirklich akzeptabel. Loslassen und nur Im-Hier-und-Jetzt leben ist nicht wirlich winterfest. Als geistigen Zustand ist es erstrebenswert, bei Wahrung der 5. Säule in Harmonie mit Natur, Gesellschaft und Achtsamkeit für Nachhaltigkeit.
Die Erfahrung von “Flow” als wichtiges Erbe vonWalt Disney’s (S.84) patentiert als “Imagineering” ist eine starke Motivation für viele Berufseinsteigende und start-ups. Diese Vertiefung oder Zeitvergessenheit lässt sich auf vielfältige Weise und bspw. in Hobbys erreichen. Die Teezeremonie und Blumensteckkunst sind sicherlich passende japanische Beispiele in diesem Zusammenhang. Musizieren ohne jegliches Publikum (Gagaku-Tradition S.94) ist Flow, für manche im Westen aber als brotlose Kunst verschmäht. Spüren von innerer Freude und Befriedigung wird sie durch das Leben tragen. Zurückhaltung und Nachhaltigkeit sind weitere Schlüsselbegriffe des Ichigai. Denken “in Hierarchien von Gewinnern und Verlierern, Anführern und Mitläufern, Vorgesetzten und Untergebenen” (S.111) wird zum Problem. Der Begirff des “wa” = “Harmonie mit unserem Umfeld” soll eine friedenschaffende Wirkung entfalten und unnötige Konflikte vemeiden. “Loslassen ist notwendig, wenn man als Assistent eines älteren Ringers, die Wünsche und Bedürfnisse einer Respektperson erfüllen muss, der man dient” (S.125). Kritikfähigkeit wird so beiderseitig kaum gelernt. Es drängt sich mir die unerklärliche Störung der Harmonie durch die angekündigte Entsorgung des strahlenden, verseuchten Wassers der Atomkraftwerks und Atomunfalls von Fukushima auf. Die rücksichtslose Zerstörung von Umwelt wird in Japan durch Ikigai scheinbar nur verzögert, aber nicht verhindert. Kurz: Ikigai mog i, Atommüll ins Meer entsorgen, mog i net.

Problemlösende

Nicht nur erst seit der Corona-Krise wissen wir, Personen, die sich als Problemlösende zeigen, sind die eigentliche Stärke eines Landes, einer Region oder einer Industrie. Die Basiskompetenzen von Problemlösen, Imagination und Kreativität sind die heimlichen Auszeichnungen eines schulischen und beruflichen Ausbildungssystems. Manches Mal hilft dabei die Mathematik, ein anderes Mal ein solides Wertesystem und öfters ist eine Kombination von beidem von Nöten. Das ist auf dem Arbeitsmarkt letztlich nicht anders. Problemlösende, die neue Wege beschreiten oder existierende Anlagen kreativ erweitern, stehen besonders hoch im Kurs. Dabei spielt es weniger eine Rolle, ob der Weg für Problemlösungskompetenz auf universitärem, hochschulischem oder beruflichem Weg erreicht wurde.

Im Arbeitsprozess offenbaren sich Problemverursachende und Problemlösendene. Rahmenbedingungen spielen eine ebenso wichtige Rolle, zum Beispiel bei der Ermöglichung von kreativen Lösungen, die eingefahrene Wege verlassen. Für das Bildungssystem heisst das, selbst einfache Tätigkeiten werden sich über den Beitrag zu Problemlösungen definieren. Die FT schreibt bereits (s.u.), dass manuelle Tätigkeiten Anteile von Programmieren, Kreativität und Problemlösen beinhalten werden. Die wenigen Beschäftigten in automatisierten Lagerhallen werden den Roboter nicht einrichten, aber zu Problemlösungen vielfältiger Art beitragen müssen. Bastelnde, Bricoleures werden immer gebraucht werden. Alleinerziehende als problemlösende AlltagsheldInnen sind ebenfalls auf einer steilen Lernkurve unter Extrembelastung.
Teile der Wissenschaft befassen sich damit, erst einmal das Problem zu definieren, einzugrenzen und bearbeitbar zu machen. Das ist wichtig. Aber die nächsten Schritte der Lösungsansätze reichen von den großen Fragen der Menschheit bis hin zum alltäglichen Bewältigen von Problemen im Arbeitsleben, wie im privaten Bereich. Theologinnen, ein Beruf mit sehr wenig Arbeitslosigkeit, haben da ein gutes Skillset: nicht vor großen Fragen zurückschreckend, aber gleichzeitig kreativ dafür sorgen, dass irgendwie genug Messwein im Kühlschrank ist für alle. Unternehmende

Für Unternehmende ist es wichtig, auf „boundary setting“ = Grenzen setzen zu achten. Gut erklärt im Artikel von Shola Asante in der FT vom 12.7.21. Unternehmende tendieren zu einer statistischen oder Status quo Sicht ihrer derzeitigen Tätigkeit. Lebensverläufe von Unternehmenden zeigen aber oft mehrfache Entwicklungen und Übergänge. Darauf lässt sich nur schwer vorbereiten. Offenheit für Neues (Big 5) erscheint besonders relevant in diesem Kontext der potentiellen starken Neuausrichtung zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt. Grenzen setzen fällt dann besonders schwer, wenn wir emotional besonders engagiert an unserer Tätigkeit hängen. Authentizität im Unternehmergeist kann leicht über das Ziel hinausschießen und das Private überlagern. Offen bleiben für spannende und notwendige Richtungswechsel ist ein Erfahrungswert. Wegen der Kontextabhängigkeit lässt sich das selten exakt planen. Risikofreudigkeit eröffnet Chancen.

Market Maker

Some say if you want to get really rich you have to found a religion. Alternatively you create a charismatic brand for the masses. Currently you might also highjack a political party and make it a personal quasi-religious enterprise. Also, to become the richest man in the world you have to disrupt the usual market practices and create your own market and rules before everybody else understands it. Digital technology is key in this respect. Microsoft, Apple, then Facebook, Amazon, Google, (GAFAM in reverse order) have successfully exploited technological leadership. But there is more to it. The real challenge is to be successful in creating i.e. making your own market, where you are setting the rules yourself and each transaction on this market is paying a percentage into your pockets. It is amazing that this market making is not considered as creating a monopoly using technology long ago. This is changing but only slowly. Originally, the state or regulator set the rules for a market. The more the abuses of GAFAM in various respects become obvious to everybody, the more the call for rule-setting of politically responsible institutions can no longer be ignored. That is the point when either the state or non-profit organisations come in and can increase overall societal welfare. The strategy then is to have a state or quasi-state organisation regulate the conditions of the maket to overcome the information asymetry between buyers and sellers on these markets.
Accordingly we witness a multitude of local, sectoral, national or international maket makers. For profit it can be a true gold mine, as non-profit it still reaps sizable percentages on market activities of members, customers and service providers. One example of such a new non-profit market maker is the British organisation “modern markets for all” (MM4A). As it is run by a trained journalist, the media coverage is considerable. For all start-ups it should be part of their business plan to check whether they have a potential to become a (local, product or sectoral) market maker of some kind, rather than yet another contributor to the wealth of the GAFAM. Business school teaching could take this into account, particularly those training social entrepreneurs.

Verluste = Gewinne

Na bei dieser Gleichung oder Balance-sheet stimmt doch etwas nicht. Mit Verluste => Gewinne könnten wir Erfolg in der Zukunft reininterpretieren. Aber dass diejenigen, die die größten Verluste oder am längsten schon Verluste schreiben, letztlich die größten Gewinner sein werden, wollen wir nicht glauben. Dennoch die Kolumne von Baruch Lev in FT 3.6.2021 (s.u.) überzeugt uns von den gewandelten Umständen und Kontexten im globalen Wettbewerb. Es zählt rasche Expansion, keine Zeit mehr für Gewinne, sofort re-investieren in Expansion oder “the next big thing” bevor die Wettbewerber es machen. Geistiges Eigentum, Patente, besondere Kompetenzen der Mitarbeiter das sind alles “Intangibles”, nicht anfassbare Werte, die aber als Kosten in der Bilanz verbucht werden. Wenn dann verlustreiche Bilanzen über Jahre vorliegen erschrecken traditionelle Investoren, aber die “accounting losers” sind eben keine “real losers”. Die Unternehmen, die in Dienstleistungen oder Produkte investieren unterscheiden sich durch ihre möglichen Gewinnaussichten fundamental von den “real losers”, die z.B. hohe Mieten in Innenstädten oder einen teuren Maschinenpark zu finanzieren haben. Alle müssen Abschreibungen berücksichtigen. Heraus kommen Fehlinformationen und -anreize für Investierende. Veraltete Buchhaltungsregeln täuschen Investierende hier über reale Werte und Verbindlichkeiten. Gleiches gilt übrigens für Kosten der Weiterbildung. Diese werden auf der Passivseite der Bilanz geführt, sind jedoch im überwiegendem Teil, bei seriöser Durchführung, Investitionen in “intangibles” auch Humankapital genannt. Dazu wurden schon Bewertungsversuche seit ca 2005 durchgeführt, die unter dem Begriff der “Saarbrücker Formel” in die Human Resources Forschung eingegangen sind. Sorgfältig einschätzen, was wirklich eine Investition darstellt ist letztlich unternehmerische Verantwortung und Vertrauen in Geschäftspraktiken. Die Buchhaltungsregeln auch diejenigen des internationalen Accountings müssen im Einzelfall untersucht und geprüft werden. Da kann viel schief laufen bei Prüfungen durch die großen Rechnungsprüfungsfirmen wie im Fall Wirecard dokumentiert.

8-ter März

Corona in Form von Covid-19 lässt uns manche Gewohnheiten ändern. Viele lassen sich Impfen (#Impftermin). Das hat auch sein Gutes. Nur, das Ausfallen von Geburtstagsfeiern, Hochzeiten und bereits verschobenen Schulklassentreffen ist schon bedauerlich. Obwohl, der Protagonist im Roman von Norbert Gstreins »Der zweite Jakob« sieht das etwas anders. In der “Zeit” lesen wir: “Der Erzähler wird sechzig und der Autor Norbert Gstrein auch. Der Roman kann als “sati­rische Klage und künstlerische Selbstermäch­tigung eines leicht depressiven Sechzigjähri­gen” gelesen werden. »Natürlich will niemand sechzig werden, jedenfalls nicht als Jubilar, und na­türlich will niemand, der bei Sinnen ist, ein Fest, um auch das noch zu feiern«, lautet der erste Satz des Romans.” (S.52 vom 8.421). Es geht auch anders. Das DiesDasKollektiv aus Berlin organisiert Partys, Feiern und Festivals als gemeinnützige Organisation für die Berliner Club-Szene. Auf der Festivalkarte (z.B.) standen mehr als 10 Clubs/Bühnen gleichzeitig zur Auswahl und im Chat wird locker gequatscht. Also auf zur nächsten Ü60-Party. Schlusssatz im Zeitartikel: ” Es ist nicht so schlimm mit den sechzig Jahren, … Sech­zig ist heute das neue Fünfzig.” Es ist das knackige Alter. Wir können es eben jetzt so richtig knall/cken lassen. Machen wir es wie die Frauenbewegung, die eben auch nach dem 8-ten März als Grafitti sprüht.

Zauberhaft

Allem Neuen wohnt ein Zauber inne. Das passende Zitat “Und jedem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne” von Hermann Hesse ist knapp kommentiert auf Wikipedia zu finden. Diese literarische Einleitung beschreibt recht gut, welche Verzückung bei start-ups zuweilen präsent ist. Nicht nur im Prozess des Gründens, sondern auch in den Kontakten mit Investoren und der ganzen Szene herrscht eine gewisse Extase vor. (Illustration W. Kandinsky 1923 Fröhlicher Aufstieg) Gut so, wenn das Start-up zu Beginn bereits eine Qual ist, Hände weg davon. Es wird oft nur schlimmer im weiteren Verlauf und Lebensverlauf. Selbst für enthusiatisch gestartete Unternehmende kommt allzu oft eine Ernüchterung, vielleicht sogar Sackgassen. Einen knappen Überblick bietet die Webseite “Deutsche Startups” oder “startbase“. Die großen Pleiten à la WIRECARD etc. lassen wir mal beiseite. Das kommentieren die Skandalmedien ausreichend, weil Quotenbringer. Mir geht es um die vielen kleinen zauberhaften Anfänge und persönlichen Lernkurven der Beteiligten. Julian Leitloff & Caspar Schlenk (Keinhorn) haben in ihrem Büchlein ein recht schonungsloses Bild gezeichnet, was es wirklich heisst, ein Start-up zu gründen. Vor allem braucht es ein dickes Fell und einen fast unbeugsamen Willen ständig “offen sein für Neues” und Lernbereitschaft.
Neben den biografischen Details der Gründenden bietet das eckige Büchlein aber auch einen Ausblick auf das Kompetenzspektrum für “Start-ups” und dann später hoffentlich “Grown-ups”. Verstreut über das Buch lassen sich Kompetenzen identifizieren: Buisiness Plan, Erstellen und Überarbeiten, Design Thinking, 3-D Druck, Buchhaltung, Marketing, Personal/Talent Management, Webpage Design und Interaktion über Social Media, Responsibility sowie Finanzen und Investmentkalkulus. Natürlich findet das alles im Team und dann im HomeOffice oder der Garage/Keller statt. Ist ne ganz schöne Packung und bitte nicht die “Deadlines” verpassen.

Das alles liest sich in dem Büchlein unterhaltsam und ohne Pathos der einen oder anderen Art. Aufgrund meiner soziologischen Forschungtradition war mir der Einstieg über das “Phänomen … Survivorship-Bias” (S.9) bedeutsam. Der Überlebendenbias besagt, dass wir meistens nur die Geschichten der Überlebenden (der Titanic) kennen, aber nicht die Geschichten der vielen hundert Ertrunkenen. Eine solche wird in dem Büchlein von den Gründenden erzählt, aber mit einem anderen Happy-End. Einmal Schiffbruch, hoffentlich kein Problem, Aufstehen und ein traumhaftes neues Schiff bauen ist das, was später einmal zählt.

Kreativ

So wie die Generation der älteren Personen sich auf die Covid-19 Einschränkungen eingestellt hat, so macht das auch die jüngere Generation. Die unter 25 oder unter 35 Jährigen hatten schon seit einigen Jahren ein fundamental anderes Medienkonsum- und produktionsverhalten als andere Generationen. Dies hat sich wohl in der jetzigen Krise nochmals verstärkt. Online Nutzung von sozialen Medien und Streaming Diensten haben sich weiter verstärkt (Statistik dazu Link). Aber anders als zu jammern, hat auch diese Generation “in die Hände gespuckt” und eben auf ihre kreative Weise Kultur, Musik, Workshops, Tanz und Gemeinsamkeit in virtuelle Party- und Erfahrungsräume verlegt. “StayAtHome” ja, aber wir lassen uns den Spaß nicht verbieten.
Neue Verknüpfungen von mehreren Intiativen haben sich gesucht und gefunden. Ein gegenseitiges Unterstützen und Miteinander durch die Durststrecke findet statt. Solidarität wächst in der Generation der vermeintlichen Individualisten auf neue Weise. So wird von den Jüngeren eine virtuelle Plattform gebastelt, Gruppen von Künstlern und Freischaffenden vernetzt und gleichzeitig noch Spenden eingesammelt. Das Drunter & Drüber Festival ist ein spannendes Beispiel. Auch vor einem Namen wie dem “Dies | Das Kollektiv” schreckt die junge Generation nicht mehr zurück. Spannende Stories entstehen und viel Gemeinsinn in einer Krise, die uns in unsere oft zu kleinen Stuben einsperren musste.
Ich verrate jetzt nicht in welchen Workshops wir uns beteiligt haben. Spaß hatten wir auf jeden Fall und dazugelernt haben wir wieder viel, dieses Mal von der engagierten Jugend. Streaming-Plattformen für Gamer und Kunstschaffende, wie Twitch, kannte ich bisher nur aus Computerfachzeitschriften. Das hat sich nachhaltig verändert.
