In the Covid-19 crisis many more people got more sleep than usual. Lockdowns and home office helps to prolong recovery periods from work. Additionally more physical exercise due to local shopping only might carry enormous health benefits. Cardio-vascular disease (CVD) benefits might only be seen much later for many persons. According to a recently published health study in the journal of “Preventing Chronic Disease” sleeping too long (>9 hours) is also an indication of not ideal cardiovascular health as sleeping too little (<6 hours). This is a rather new finding, because previously we only thought not sleeping enough is bad for your heart, blood pressure and obesity. For public health scholars the potential positive impact of Covid-19 consists in the increased physical activities of many persons in (soft lockdowns). Strict lockdowns (with stay at home only) might have the opposite effect as later on Cardio-vascular diseases (CVD) might be a medium term consequence. The different lockdown policies in the EU are a huge “natural experiment” of wider public health topics. Researchers just have to go out an measure in representative sampes impacts in two countries with different lockdowns over a longer period. In the paper more than 150 minutes of moderate hysical exercise (i.e. walking 6x25min per week) already contributed to improve the association of cardiovascular health and sleep. Ok – here I leave my desk for a walk !!! Thinking about Hippokrates, Pasteur, Koch. 
Maske
Das CoronaVirus wird mit uns bleiben, ob wir wollen oder nicht. Dann werden wir uns eben anpassen müssen. Okay, die 85+ Geburtstagsfeier meiner Mutter musste ausfallen. Gemeinschaftsunterkünfte mit Hochbetagten stehen unter besonderem Schutz mit Einlasskontrollen, und das ist gut so. Die älteren Personen müssen noch mehr auf sich selbst gestellt im Alltag klar kommen. Masken zum Schutz vor Ansteckung immernoch weitgehend Fehlanzeige. Die Generation der Hochbetagten mit Kindheitserfahrung der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit weiss noch, was plötzlich alleine zurecht kommen heisst. Da mache ich mir irgendwie die Schutzvorkehrung selbst. Die Bastelstunde beginnt. Nach einigen ersten Versuchen und Ölen der Nähmaschine sind die ersten Prototypen fertig und der Familienrat kann tagen.
Also: die gesundheitliche Schutzfunktion der Masken sollte im Vordergrund stehen. Kaffeefiltereinsatz schon gut, aber Flies ist sicherer. Toll, die Wiederverwertbarkeit der Masken nach Auskochen im Topf oder mit Bügeln verdient ein Nachhaltigkeitssiegel. Das Wiederverwerten von Stoffresten spart ebenfalls kräftig CO². Klasse Initiative. Die Lehre aus der Covid-Geschichte:
Behalte deine alte Nähmaschine, die Stoffreste, Gummibänder und Füllstoffe. Alles was mal vorgesehen war für Kostüme oder Fastnachtskostüme hat einen neuen sinnvollen Einsatz gefunden.

Bild unten hat sie mit dem Tablet fotografiert, Bastelei beschrieben und per email zugeschickt. Eigeninitiative kennt keine Altersgrenze. Lernen voneinander auch nicht. 
Transparent health care
In times of live or die questions, country comparisons are informative. It is the time to endorse, again and again, complete transparency to facilitate learning across borders (see recently The Guardian 13.5.2020). China has not been very transparent at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemia. Other countries should not follow this track in terms of lack transparency. This appies equally to transparency of hospital and care professionals doing amazing jobs in these critical times. No doubt about this. In order to learn about the need for qualified employees in this crisis, I recommend the full thread of the tweets from “Mary Poppins” on what it means to administer a respiratory machine to a patient.

The experience needed, the understanding of medical processes are only part of the story. Stress, mental overload, burn-out due to long-term shift-work and irregular working hours including frequent (unpaid?) overtime and lack of sufficient training may cause more fatalities than would otherwise be the case. Teamwork across shifts and weekends has to be effectively coordinated. Medication profiles need to updated and understood for adequate application from all team members not only the medical doctor or shift supervisor. In emergency situations panic control mechanism also are relevent features that have to be learned and experienced. In a previous analysis of data from 18.000 nurses in Canada we could provide evidence of the importance of some of these measures. Transparency is key. Cover-ups of past failures cost dearly in this global pandemia. Full paper.

On Mortality in EU
It is normal business for demographers to deal with mortality and the statistics of mortality. The latest data I found from official European statistics from Eurostat refer back to 2015. They mention 571.000 potentially avoidable deaths in the Europen Union of the 1.7 Million deaths among the population younger than 75 years of age, the lower bound of average life expectancy. A look at the leading causes of preventable death shows that prevention of deaths due to alcohol, smoking and environmental causes beyond suicide could safe more than 200.000 lifes per year! Please pause a while in front of these figures.
In Germany
we deplore more than 900.000 deaths each year and according to the statistical office on an average day during the year we have 2100 persons leaving us. In a severe case of influenza these death rates jumped for example in February 2018 to more than 3.100 persons in one day. Hence, keep calm and carry on with taking Covid-19 seriously, but no reason to panic.
Taking a look at our Belgian neighbors, the public health statistics on Belgian Mortality show a cycllical pattern of mortality with peaks in January for the influenza period and sometimes on hot summer days. 
Additionally, there are several severe environmental health hazards which we have gotten used to. Not much fuzz in public about these increased death rates any more. They include many preventable deaths as well. The deadly cocktail of fine particle dust in high traffic countries combined with peaks in temperature and ozone levels yield preventable peaks in death tolls across Europe not just in Belgian, different from region to region and city to city or suburbs or proximity to risky areas. No prove available yet, just coincidence data that need close monitoring. Late data reporting as accused for UK by the Financial times needs to be followed closely for all countries.
Students should build their statistical methods skill and get ready to use the statistical software R for further analyses useful to produce nice figures and even better advanced analyses.

Kaizen oder Kai’Zen bei Covid-19
Die Buchveröffentlichung zu Kaizen bei Pan Macmillan (Bild unten) hat mich erneut mit persönlichem Gewinn an die altbekannte Managementmethode anknüpfen lassen. Für viele ist Kaizen, ich mag lieber Kai’Zen als Wortspiel und konkretere Vorstellung zu den japanischen Kanji-Zeichen. Laut einem Wikipediaeintrag steht “Kai” für Veränderung und Wandel, “Zen” = zum Besseren, zum Guten. Der daraus resultierende kontinuierliche Verbesserungsprozess wurde in der Privatwirtschaft und dem öffentlichen Dienst geradezu zu einem neuen Mantra. Bei der Wahl der richtigen Indikatoren wie Patienten- oder Kundenzufriedenheit und eben nicht nur Kosten(senkung) kann das Anstoßen von Kai’Zen mittelfristig und langfristig wahre Wunder bewirken. Deswegen ist der Vergleich mit dem auf Schumpeter zurückgehenden Prozess der “kreativen Destruktion” d.h. dem Erfolg von radikalen Veränderungen stets sinnvoll. Viele Start-ups können von dieser Methode lernen, anwendbar bei sich selbst, in Gruppen oder für ganze Gesellschaften. In Zeiten von Covid-19 könnten wir auch sagen “von Viren lernen”. Kai’Zen ist “Bionics” pur. Aber genauso mit dieser Methode werden wir den Virus eindämmen und einen Impfstoff entwickeln. Die Viren bleiben gut in Kai’Zen, wir auch. Bleiben wir dran, wir haben den längeren Atem ;-). Einen der führenden Virologen Peter Piot hätte Covid-19 nun dennoch fast erwischt.
Masculinities
The exhibition of photos and film on “masculinities,liberation through photography” is an excellent example of how artistic approaches to central social phenomena enrich our understanding. The collection of images on masculinities enlightens and reveals the social construction of masculinity. All persons interested in such basic questions should grab the opportunity to pay a visit to the Barbican Centre in London until May 2020 (Later also in Berlin). Perfect choice of a location as the Barbican Centre represents a fine example of “brutal architecture” in London. This is already worth a visit for those not familiar with such concepts. Prepare to get lost somewhere in the multitude of cultural offerings. It feels like Centre Pompidou in Paris, but has additionally a splendid concert hall.
Depending on the time and location of our upbringing we are subject to different social constructions of masculinity. Browse through family collections of photos from grand fathers, fathers and your own youth and maybe your children. From the perspective of how masculinity has been framed at different epochs and across continents, it is obvious that masculinity just as feminity are constructed by social discourse, social choices and media representations. Make it a choice – nowadays – yes we can !

Weiterbildung
Ein Vergleich der Weiterbildung zwischen den Bundesländern zeigt besonders über Jahre hinweg seit 2007 keine besonders erfreuliche Entwicklung. Statt dem Fachkräftemangel wirksam zu begegnen, zeigt sich bei den Geringqualifizierten laut Mikrozensus ( DIE und Bertelsmann Stiftung) bestenfalls Stagnation. Während rund 12% der Bevölkerung 25+ an Weiterbildung teilgenommen hat, sind es bei geringqualifizierten Personen nur um die 6%. Dringend werden neue Daten gebraucht und tiefregionalisierte Auswertungen dazu. Die von mir erstellten Grafiken zu Verläufen lassen zumindest kurz aufhorchen. Weiterhin Handlungsbedarf! nicht nur in Nordrhein-Westfalen, sondern auch in Baden-Württemberg.
E-Car Market and Sharing
2020 is supposed to bring many new E-Cars to the market. Car-Sharing with the retreat of DriveNow and ShareNow from several cities with only moderate prospects. The Brussels Motor Show, also called Auto-Salon including the #WeAreMobility hall is still going strong right at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis in early 2020. Some of the established car-sharing companies like Cambio.de or Cambio.be are not even present at such events. Poppy.be has few visitors as relatively unknown sharing-company yet. Not many more visitors I spotted at europcar.be with the attached scooter-sharing in Brussels and Antwerp.
The Auto-Salon gives a preview on E-Cars from most major companies. The E-go alternative has no presence there and competition of the big established companies from Europe and Japan take most of the space.
Most Consumers seem to want a practical solution to their mobility at a reasonable price, few seem to search for cars to show-off with. There is more “rational choice” around than in previous years. I should have done a survey to measure this, last time and this time round. This could be a worry to the industry as they are more used to sell “dream cars” than practical day-to-day mobility solutions.
“Balance” als Geheimnis des Alterns
Die am 13.1.2020 im PNAS veröffentlichte Studie zu Alternsprozessen des Ginkgobaums, der mehr als 1000 Jahre alt werden kann, lassen eine alte Weisheit des Alterns wieder aufleben. Die Balance bestehend aus neuem Wachstum von Zellen und dem Absterben von Zellen beschreibt den Alterungsprozess bei Langlebigkeit. Am Beispiel des langlebigen Ginkgo biloba beschreiben die Autoren den biologischen und genetisch-bedingten Alterungsprozess. Die deutsche Wikipedia-Seite weist interessante Abweichungen zu der englischsprachigen Seite auf. Neben mehr Hinweisen auf potentielle Effekte bei verschiedenen medizinischen Indikationen kann natürlich ein Hinweis auf Goethe nicht fehlen. Hatte er doch den Baum bereits literarisch verewigt in seinem Gedicht von 1815 “Ginkgo biloba”. Kein Wunder also, dass er Ginkgobaum in Deutschland nahezu mythische Kraft zu besitzen scheint. Vereinzelt finden sich Fanseiten des Ginkgo im Internet. Spannend ist jedoch auch der japanische Mythos um den Ginkgo. Selbst die Atombombe von 1945 hatte ein Haus zerstört, doch der benachbarte Ginko blieb erhalten und ist heute ein Denkmal der Hoffnung. Hier schließt sich der Kreis zur Alternsforschung. Wie beeinflussen soziale Kontexte, im Extremfall Kriege, die Genetik und Epigenetik? Wir bleiben dran an dem Thema.

Get Going 2020
As long as medical doctors and pharmacists are paid for treating disease they have no incentive to encourage persons to get going, get out and walk or other physical activity. The benefits of exercise are huge, not only for cardio-vascular strength but also in cancer prevention. Just 5 hours a week is a very reasonable aim to strive for. Just check for the source directly.

Selbst mit dem Wissen über die kulturellen Bräuche beginnt erst die multikulturelle oder interkulturelle Herausforderung. Als College Master im Krupp college hatten wir für solche Feierlichkeiten ein festliches Essen mit kleinen Geschenken und Livemusik abgehalten. Das fand ungeteilte Zustimmung. Interkulturelle Kompetenz lehren und dabei lernen war uns immer ein Vergnügen.

E-Book = Elektronische Bücher
Verleihen von Ebooks in Bibliotheken ist mit entsprechenden Lizenzverfahren möglich. Das managen die meisten Bibliotheken bereits gut. Dank geht an die Niederländer, die diese Frage bereits vom EuGH, dem europäischen Gerichtshof klären ließen. iRights weist darauf auf seiner Webseite bereits seit langem hin. Am 19.12.2019 kam nun das nächste Urteil: Der Weiterverkauf von Ebooks ist nicht rechtmäßig. Im Urteil heißt es “Die Überlassung eines E‑Books zur dauerhaften Nutzung an die Öffentlichkeit durch Herunterladen fällt unter den Begriff der „öffentlichen Wiedergabe“ und insbesondere unter den Begriff der „Zugänglichmachung der Werke in der Weise, dass sie Mitgliedern der Öffentlichkeit von Orten und zu Zeiten ihrer Wahl zugänglich sind“, im Sinne von Art. 3 Abs. 1 der Richtlinie 2001/29/EG des Europäischen Parlaments und des Rates vom 22. Mai 2001 zur Harmonisierung bestimmter Aspekte des Urheberrechts und der verwandten Schutzrechte in der Informationsgesellschaft.” Es soll damit wohl die Weiterverbreitung und das nun illegale Weiterverkaufen unterbunden werden bei gleichzeitigem Schutz der © copyright Vorgaben. Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob das den Autoren letztlich hilft. Zugang zu den Portalen der Buchverkaufenden ist ja einfach, aber den Gewinn stecken hauptsächlich die Zwischenhändler ein. Vielleicht sollten wir Aussagen wieder in Stein meißeln? Warum ist der elektronische Rechtehandel so schwerfällig in Europa. Mehr “Imagination” dringend nötig.
We don’t need no education?
The OECD has published new results from the PISA round of data collection from 2018 in December 2019. Some results seem to be more trustworthy than others, particularly when different motivations of pupils are taken into account to participate at their best in such surveys. On the 3rd of December in Brussels a school had just a visit by police, apparently called in by the headmaster, to restore order. The newspaper “Le Soir” published on the 4th December an account of what happened in that nice-looking school from the outside near the famous DUDEN-Park in Forèt, Bruxelles.
On the 4th December, also in Brussels, there was the final conference of the “friends-project“. This EU-cofinanced project tries to build more links of institutions that apply Montessori learning in schools. Maybe it would be a good idea to get the two places in touch with eachother somehow. On the partnership page of the Erasmus+-project there is a Belgian partner. Okay, transcendental meditation is not for everybody, but calming spirits and frustrations to avoid school drop-out and stigmatisation of youth as violent is obviously the worst case scenario.
Happiness in Hospital
Whenever you have to go to a hospital, briefly estimate the happiness or job satisfaction of the person working there. This seems to be a good indicator of the probability that they perform, or are willing to perform, a good job. After all the staff is not all “superhumans”. Previous work on job satisfaction in the EU and Canadian nurses already indicates what a small inquiry into job satisfaction in a hospital in Keny revealed. Current dissatisfaction levels among hospital staff is unlikely to have no effects at all, but we do not even dare to collect appropriate data. In a previous study we used “nested” data collection team-leader and employees in the team to analyse such effects on varius team-climate parameters. Appropriate multi-level modelling of the data can yield trustworthy results. Would be nice to proceed with such a study across Europe. Outcomes measures such as medium patient satisfaction might be optimal to measure additionally. Well, just dreaming again about what kind of data we would need to roughly estimate how much more resources are needed in the health sector.
Who can’t get no satisfaction?
Life satisfaction, job satisfaction and satisfaction with family life and/or leisure continue to be a passionate research issue (Steffen Otterbach, Alfonso Sousa-Poza, Valerie Møller, 2019). Nice to find that most of my own research in this area is still coroborated with different cohort data recently. The good message is that former findings seem still to be valid. The bad message is that in young ages between 15 and 44 most of the satisfaction levels keep getting worse before they start to get better (mostly only after 45). Marriage has mixed effects, but having children is good for family life, but bad for your satisfaction with leisure time. Nothing really new here, you might have guessed it.
Would be nice to know more about regional or rural/urban differences of satisfaction as well as what might be consequences of satisfaction/dissatisfaction in the short or medium-term. But I am satisfied with the interim findings already presented.

Die Rückkehr der Ungleichheit
Thomas Piketty ist ein weiteres epochales Werk gelungen. Die französische Ausgabe seines Buches: “Capital et idéologie”, erschien im September 2019 (Éditions du Seuil) und umfasst 1200 Seiten. Die Fortsetzung von “Capital au XXIème siècle” ermöglicht aufschlussreiche Vergleiche mit anderen Ländern und Kontinenten. Daraus entwickelt Piketty eine Sichtweise auf die ökonomischen Ungleichheiten in Gesellschaften. Eine Perspektive, die ich in die Tradition der politischen Ökonomie einordnen würde. Es ist eindrucksvoll, wie der Anstieg der ökonomischen Ungleicheit seit 1980 dargestellt wird, insbesondere Schaubild 0.3 auf Seite 37. Die Einsicht auf S.39, dass sich die Ungleichheit in 2018 gemessen mit dem Anteil der wohlhabensten 10% einer Gesellschaft am Gesamteinkommen der Gesellschaft zwischen 34% in Europa, 48% in den USA, 55% in Indien, 56% in Brasilien und 64% im Mittleren Osten liegt, erklärt vielleicht schon einige der aktuellen politischen Unruhen.
Besonders intessant wird die Lektüre beispielsweise auf S.758ff. Da wird empirisch die verzerrende Darstellung des Bruttoinlandsprodukts pro Kopf für verschiedenartig ungleiche Gesellschaften dargestellt. Piketty scheut sich nicht die “Instrumentalisierung” einer vereinfachten Darstellung des BIP pro Kopf zu kritisieren. Besonders auf S.760 streicht er die ungleichen (Grund)besitzverhältnisse heraus: “En particulier, la concentration de la propriété n’a en réalité jamais cessé de se situer à des niveaux impressionnants dans les différents pays européens. Or cette concentration patrimoniale est en progression depuis les années 1980-1990, avec à peine 5% du patrimoine privé total détenu par les 50% les plus pauvres, contre 505-60% pour les 10% les plus riches.” Als Zusammenfassung der Daten des 10. Kapitels S. 489ff mit dem Titel: “Die Krise der Gesellschaften der Eigentümer” hat sich der Wert des Eigentums, für alle erlebbar auf den Immobilien und Wohnungsmärkten, insbesondere in großen Städten geutlich zugunsten der Eigentümer entwickelt. Dieser Trend hat insbesondere die Mehrfacheigentümer und obersten 10% der Gesellschaften überproportional begünstigt.
Ungleichheit ist aber nicht unabänderlich. Vielmehr betont Piketty in seiner Schlussfolgerung (S. 1191) in Abgrenzung zum “kommunistischen Desaster” eine soziale Idee oder Sozialismus der Teilhabe und einen sozialen Föderalismus. Wichtiger Bestandteil ist ebenfalls eine Teilung der Stimmrechte und der Macht in Unternehmen mit den Beschäftigten.

Mobilität neu denken
Unsere Faszination für individuelle Mobilität animiert zu künstlerischer Interpretation. Ein gutes Verkaufsargument für Einräder. Eine wahre Bereicherung auf der Mobilitätsmesse in Brüssel im September 2019. Viele Ideen zum Teilen von Rädern. Leider wenig Präsenz und Neuheiten rund um geteilte, öffentliche Verkehrsmittel dort präsent. Teilen von vorhandener Infrastruktur wie Wegenetze für mehr Arten von Fortbewegung kaum ein Thema. Eine Stunde komplettes Netz in Städten nur für nicht-motorisierten Personenverkehr freigeben. Es braucht mehr Wagemut mit Vorschlägen und Experimentieren, was denn gewünscht wird. Ethical Investment 2019
With stock markets reaching new highs as well as the price of gold at a 6 months and one year peak, this is a perfect time for investors to rethink their strategies and create a new legacy. This new legacy is both for them as well as for society as a whole. This time it might be for Europe. Socially responsible investment is more easily found in Europe as stated in an article of 17.7.2018 in the Financial Times. #FridaysForFuture activists and your own children will thank you eventually. However, guidance on relevant indicators is both sketchy and scarce especially in the traditional financial press. Good opportunity for inter-generational discussions. In the years to come.

DGB hat passend zu 30 Jahre Mauerfall seine große Kundgebung in Leipzig auf die Straße gebracht. Engagierte Reden und anregende Stände von Mitgliedsgewerkschaften sorgten für ein gelungenes Event. Europa stand im Mittelpunkt. Das Medienecho war jedoch gerade mal durchschnittlich. Speculation bubbles
Learning about bubbles is exciting. As kids we jump in the air to burst bubbles, as adults we are delighted to taste sparkling wine. It is easy to know that a bubble has burst (ex post). Many examples can be quoted in economic and social history on this. When bubbles burst hitting many persons this becomes an issue of political economy. Are we just behaving like “apes” with basic “animal instincts” as suggested by “Jan Bruegel d.J.”? Tulip mania is a part of European history and Bitcoin mania the most recent example of a bubble-like development of a specific market. How about creating your own currency. Here is how to do it. Industrial Pioneers Summit: At the Hannover Messe on 2nd April 2019 Professor Detlef Zühlke, Executive Chairman, smartfactory-KL e.V. – Industrie 4.0 & Smart Factory talked about his baby: Industry 4.0, a word like a “cloud in the sky”. According to him the 4th industrial revolution with the smart factory, just like the smart home developments, is the current stage of development of industry. After the previous phase of the 3rd industrial revolution “automization”, which we also know from the home with our washing and coffee machines, we govern our factories and homes more and more from smart connected devices.
With artificial intelligence around the corner, the usual cooperation of users and machines or robots as standard, we need to make careful choices for the “User Interface Design” to develop it into a “User Experience Design”. Well put. The user wants green industries and products. Hence get your CO² footprint right as well.
Lots of sociology at the fair. Instead of individualization from the 80s and 90s the pioneers of industry now talk about “the segment of one” in production. It just means a specific product for each customer to make the person believe s/he is really individually served.
The nexus of global and local (glocal) politics and consumerism is adapted to production. Glocalization (definition here) in industrial strategy has a different meaning: bring your production very near the consumer or directly to customers, this also beats the mass production advantage of low wage cost countries. With big data from local customers you can tailor-make the product at the edge of your market (sneakers for example). Hannover Messe always worth a visit for sociologist, too. Greening of production not yet really a mainstream trend, but several “Leuchttürme” at places. 
Sprachpolitik
Auf der internationalen Industriemesse in Hannover #HM19 wurde auf dem Pioneer Summit am 2.4.2019 wieder überraschend viel Deutsch gesprochen. Dem EU-Kommissar Öttinger auf Deutsch zuzuhören ist erfreulicher als auf Englisch. Der Vortrag von Klaus Helmrich, immerhin Mitglied des Vorstands der Siemens AG auf Deutsch zu folgen, ebenfalls bereichernd. Der unglückliche englischsprachige Titel “Thinking industry further!” kann man sich mit Industrie weiterdenken zurecht reimen. Genauer war dann der Untertitel: “Die nächste Stufe des Digital Enterprise”. Von “Made in Germany” sind wir längst zu “engineered in Germany” übergegangen. Aber das war Industrie 3.0. Bei der Industrie 4.x spielen vernetzte Standorte der Produktion, Entwicklung und Kunden eine zentrale Rolle. Sprachpolitik kann hierbei zu einem kleinen und bescheidenem Sicherheitsvorteil werden. Übersetzungsfehler von Längenmaßen (inch in centimeter) oder anderen Details verursachen kostspielige “Engineering Disaster” wohl auch bei AIRBUS industries aufgetreten.
Einigen Diplomaten und Journalisten zufolge wird selbst in der EU Kommission seit dem Brexit-Votum bereits mehr in anderen Muttersprachen geplaudert, zumindest in den Kaffeepausen. Willkommen in der alten, Neuen Vielfalt. Sprachen und Kulturen Verstehen lernen lohnt sich wieder.

737 Max 8 and Science
The 346 persons who died in crashes of the fairly new airplanes of Boeing 737 Max have nothing to gain from the ex-post evaluation of the crash. The journal “Scientific American” published an interview with a former Boeing employee who puts a relationship of the two crashes into doubt. The article in the online version of the 13th of March by Mrs. Gohd is full of stereotypes rather than scientific information. This puts science or science journalism into a bad light. Let’s wait for the black box to be read! and then judge, but not wait for further casualties please. The “precautionary principle“, to protect persons from harm for example by introducing not suffienctly testes new technology, makes a lot of sense in the aviation industry. That’s why the EU might be slower in the adoption of some innovations, but is more likely to avoid fatal accidents as a consequence of hasty innovation.
Rodin’s famous sculpture sums up the need and grief to think twice before you act. Mourning of the dead due to neglect of sufficient thought prior to action included. At least, this is my modern interpretation of this piece of art with respect to responsibility and the precautionary principle.

Nobel prize museum
The visit to the splendid Nobel museum in Stockholm is of course a highlight for all scientists. Even if the social sciences including economics do not get awarded an official Nobel prize. More impressions of Stockholm here.
The Nobel prize for peace was awarded to Martin Luther King, but one of the persons he most admired Mahatma Gandhi never received the prize, or not in time before being shot.
… and some like songwriter Bob Dylan (not Dylan Thomas) received the Nobel prize 2016 for literature, most likely to give the Nobel prize a more popular image. Without intonation the poems sound rather flat and do not stand up easily against other previous awardees like Patrick Modiano 2014 or Herta Müller 2009.
